Don’t worry… it’s not as hard as it sounds.
You don’t HAVE to make things as complicated as everyone makes it seem.
We’ll break it down for you and tell you everything you need to know.
Here is a list of things you need to get started:
- A Way to Stay Organized and Focused
Staying organized and focused is the key to success, regardless of your profession but particularly as an affiliate marketer.
The barrier to entry in affiliate marketing is extremely low because it doesn’t require much up-front investment like regular businesses do, so if you aren’t keeping up with the competition you’ll have a VERY rough time in the long run.
You don’t need to spend a bunch of money or take a month to research ways to stay organized, you just need to be able to keep track of important information and have something you can use as a reference point when you get distracted.
You’d be surprised at how few people put an effort in to get organized, and you’d be surprised at how drastically you can increase productivity if you have a hard time focusing (like I do) just by having something you can look at to remind you of your priorities.
All you really need is Google Spreadsheets, to keep track of numbers and info, and Trello to keep track of your goals and what tasks you should be working on at any given time.
- A Website
A website gives you the ability to post a TON of digital content that viewers can “consume”. This will not only get you attention and allow you to sell products, but it’ll also help you grow as an individual (more on growing as a person later).
Having your own website sounds like it would be hard or expensive but it isn’t. There are even options to have websites and blogs that don’t cost ANYTHING… but it’s best to invest a little bit of money into your website and your business, so you have exactly what you need.
Don’t let that scare you though, you don’t have to spend anything and you can still do just fine. The important part is starting a website and keeping it running. This will allow people to find your products and make you money to expand your business.
- Social Media Accounts
These days social media is the most popular way for people to communicate with each other.
People are spending more and more time interacting with each other over social media and this trend doesn’t appear to be stopping any time soon.
If you want to get your brand out there in front of people you are going to need SOME kind of social media presence…
You don’t have to spend all day on every single social media platform, but make sure you find at least one that you understand and take the time to grow your following.
We’ll go into more detail later in this article if you need to know exactly how to scale your brand with social media.
- Connections With People
Connecting with people is one of the most important things you can do. The only way for you to be successful is if you solve some kind of problem for people and you make them appreciate you.
Connecting with people is more than just posting updates to your social media regularly, you have to actually engage with your audience and find out what they want so you can provide a better service to them.
If you don’t attempt to build SOME kind of connection with your audience then why would they want to support you? They don’t care about your fancy website, they care about you… Remember that when you’re writing and posting on your social media accounts.
The more you connect with your audience on an individual level, the more successful you will be.

If you want to make money, you have to have something to sell to people.
You don’t want to just mindlessly push trashy products on your wonderful audience though!
No-one wants to use products that aren’t useful or entertaining at least.
You also want to understand the differences between selling digital products and selling physical products… Each type of product has advantages and disadvantages so you’ll want to really try to think about what will work best for YOUR goals.
The BEST thing about affiliate marketing is you don’t have to actually make your own product. Pretty much every big company out there has an affiliate program you can join, which will allow you to start promoting their products for a commission.
We’ll go into more detail about specific products you should consider later in this article.
Without growth, you aren’t going to get very far in life.
And we don’t mean just business growth.
You’re going to have to grow as a person too.
You’re going to have to learn a LOT along the way, but that’s ok… everyone has to do it.
- A Business License
When you first start out with affiliate marketing and blogging, you don’t need a business license.
Is it good to have a business license, proper trademarks, patents, employees, etc? Yes, of course it is.
Unfortunately, doing everything 100% properly is expensive and hard, BUT you don’t need any of those things to start out.
Most of us can simply just do the research for our niche, start a website, get good enough at marketing to get some income coming in, then pay someone who knows what they are doing to set everything up really well for us.
If you can do the research and understand how to go about structuring businesses and you can understand business law then, by all means, spend the time learning how to do it and do it yourself, but if you can’t, don’t just give up because you can’t afford a business license right now.
Some places don’t even require people to get business licenses, but it’s your responsibility to know your local laws and regulations.
Take care of it as soon as you can, but it doesn’t have to be done before you start. No-one is trying to sue someone they don’t even know exists and no-one will even know your company is a thing at first.

Making your first website can be scary, but don’t worry, it’s really easy.
Technology is so AMAZING now, so it’s easier than ever to create really amazing looking content on a budget.
WordPress is the software most people use to start websites because there is extensive online support for it and there are tons of third-party plugins that can add all sorts of functionality to your website.
WordPress also happens to be extremely easy to use as well, which helps a lot if you don’t know any coding.
Later on in this post we will help you set up a WordPress website with Siteground hosting.
For Personal Blogs And Websites
Personal blogs and small personal websites don’t have the same needs as other types of websites so most providers will be able to give you something that suits your needs.
I personally tried most of the website building tools out there, and they all have some positives and negatives.
While website builders like Wix, Weebly, and Squarespace have wonderful tools that are easy to use and make really good looking websites fairly quickly, and the WordPress.com version is decent as well… the best route is to just go with the WordPress.org version of WordPress and purchase separate hosting.

Small businesses, entrepreneurs, and hobbyists are all playing a completely different game than big corporations so their approach must also be a little different.

Choosing a Niche
Your niche is extremely important. If you’re interested in sports, you probably don’t want to be sitting there writing and research about knitting, right?

How to Make a Self-Hosted WordPress Website on Siteground

Now that you have an idea of why you’re choosing Siteground, let’s walk you through the entire process, that way you can see exactly how to get started.
Step 1: Signing Up
First, click here to go to the Siteground website.
Once there, select “Managed WordPress Hosting”. This costs the same amount as regular hosting, but it’s specifically setup for WordPress users. If you plan on creating an e-commerce store on your site, you can choose “Woocommerce Hosting” instead and still follow along with this guide, but we won’t be showing you how to setup the Woocommerce feature. Luckily, that is all done once your site is actually made and there are plenty of guides for setting it up.

Step 2: Choose a Domain Name

Step 3: Finish Account Creation
Once you have chosen the domain you want to use, review your order and finish creating your account. This is where you’ll enter billing information and pay Siteground.
Step 4: Installing WordPress
Now that you have your hosting plan setup, it’s time to start setting up your website. Siteground makes it really easy and all you have to do is click on the “Set up site” button, then select “Start New Website”, then choose WordPress from the list of applications and enter the email address you want to use as your website administrator along with a password. This login info will allow you to access the admin panel for your website itself, which is different than accessing your Siteground hosting account.
Step 5: Activating HTTPS to Secure Your Site
Siteground may ask you if you want to install some other optional features like themes and a few other services. If you see anything you like, select it and their installer will automatically prepare everything for you.
When you are done, click on “Manage Site”. This will bring you to the Siteground Dashboard, and this is where you’ll enable SSL encryption to secure your site.
Click on the “Security” tab on the left hand side of the Siteground dashboard, then click “SSL Manager”. Select the SSL certificate you want to use and click “Get”.
Once your SSL certificate has been set up, click the “HTTPS Enforce” button on the left hand side of your screen and activate the HTTPS Enforce option.
Step 6: Accessing Your Site’s Admin Dashboard
Now that your HTTPS has been setup and activated, it’s time to head over to your new website’s admin panel. To do this, click on the “Dashboard” button on the left side of your screen, then select “App Manager”
Inside the Siteground App Manager you will see your website’s name, and in the bottom right hand corner will be a button that will bring you to your website’s admin panel.
Step 7: Picking a WordPress Theme
Now that you’re in your admin panel, it’s time to pick a theme so you can get your website finished and start posting actual content.
Themes are an easy way to make a fancy looking website without having any coding experience. Coders have already made a TON of themes for you to choose from, and there are a bunch of wonderful themes you can use for free.
The theme you use affects the loading speed of your website, so it’s a good idea to do a little research about the different themes, but here’s a small list of ones we suggest using:
- Neve – Fast and simple. This is the theme this site was made with. It’s not the fanciest theme in the world, but I really like it.
- OceanWp – This theme is really amazing for making great looking websites, but some of thee extra features can slow your site down a little. Overall it’s a great theme.
- GeneratePress – Very basic theme but it’s fast and is easy to understand.
To select a theme, click on the “Appearance” button on the left side of your website’s admin panel. Then click “Add New” to see the list of themes available.
Step 8: Adding Plugins
Once you have a theme selected, you can start installing plugins, which are basically programs that add different features to your site or help you manage your site. Be careful though because adding a bunch of plugins can slow your site down and make it more vulnerable to hackers, so don’t just download every single plugin.
Here’s a list of plugins that we think are amazing:
- Easy Table of Contents – This plugin allows you to add a nice table of contents with just a couple clicks. This is great if you have long articles.
- Autoptimize – This plugin helps you compress images and speeds up your site.
- Redirection – If you have to manage any redirects, this plugin makes it really easy.
Congrats! You’ve just built your first website and you’re ready to start making content.
To start writing a post for your new website, click “Posts” on the left site of your admin panel, and then click “Add New”.
Once you start writing posts, you can find products related to your niche from either affiliate networks or from the websites of products related to your niche.
Most companies have some kind of affiliate program, so if you can think of a product you’d like to promote, contact the company and ask them or look for an “affiliate” link at the bottom of their website.

Making An Online Shop With Shopify
If you’d prefer to have an online shop, or if you don’t want to use WordPress for some reason, you may want to consider checking out e-commerce site builders like Shopify or Etsy.
Shopify is a great solution for people who want to get involved with dropshipping because Etsy doesn’t allow mass-produced products to be sold on their platform.
Dropshipping allows you to let another company take care of everything except advertising. So you basically just create a shopify store, add products, and start selling.
Honestly, it’s a LOT more complicated than that, but essentially that’s all there is to it.
Simple Ways To Make Money Online
You don’t always have to over-complicate things to make money. It’s not a bad idea to try some complicated marketing tactics eventually to scale your business, but at the beginning you need to just try things out and learn how to get sales.
Some people choose to start a website, while others promote products and services in Facebook and Reddit groups.
There isn’t a right or wrong way to do it, but here are some ways to get your affiliate links seen by other people:
- Creating a website and using Search Engine Optimization (SEO)
– When you create content that’s optimized for search engines, search engines like Google and Bing will send you an increasing amount of traffic over time. As you release more content the traffic keeps increasing, eventually creating a ridiculous amount of income. A good website can scale out of control.
– VERY minimal starting costs.
– Low barrier to entry.
– SEO skills are valuable to ad agencies.
– A LOT of competition
– Takes a long time for search engines to notice you
– Constant search engine algorithm updates make traffic numbers unpredictable
– Keyword research is time-consuming and boring. You don’t NEED to do keyword research, but it helps.
- Posting your links in Facebook Groups and Reddit communities.
– Very easy to do. Just copy and paste/share a post with your links in it regularly, OR chat with people and answer their questions, then give them links to whatever service can solve their problem.
– Low barrier to entry
– Faster results than SEO
– A LOT of competition
– If you spam too much you WILL get penalized. Social media sites will suspend you if you spam them with links, while Reddit communities will ban you from their community if you don’t add value. Just don’t go crazy and you’ll be fine.
– Doesn’t scale well.
- Paid Advertising.
– Gets you seen by a LOT of people
– You can target specific audiences that are more likely to convert
– Highly performance-based, meaning the better you get at it, the more money you can make.
– Advertising platforms usually run promotions for new users that give you a bunch of free advertising credits. For example: Pinterest has a deal right now where new advertisers can earn $100 in free advertising credits when they spend their first $30 on ads, AND they can earn $100 MORE by referring another user that starts running ads. That’s a ridiculous amount of value. (Hint: we are trying to get our $100 in ad credits by referring you with the link above, because that’s how it’s done ^.^)
– Advertising costs money
– Since advertising is performance-based, you will struggle to make money until you know what you’re doing.
– Ad companies may be weird about sending traffic directly to affiliate links (you can still send traffic to sites like Bookshop.org though)
Where to Find Products to Promote: Affiliate Networks
Pretty much every company these days has some sort of affiliate program, but if you can’t seem to find the right product you should check out these affiliate networks.
A LOT of people start off with Clickbank because there aren’t many, if any, requirements to join their network. They also have a Clickbank University training course that can help you learn the in’s and out’s, but realistically you can teach yourself for free. If you don’t mind investing a little money into your skills though, they also have a $7 Trip Wire Copywriting Course, which essentially is just crash course that teaches you 77 tips to improve your copywriting skills.
In all honesty, you should be careful with any kind of online training though. Courses can provide amazing value, but the marketing world we’re living in today is focused around luring you in with really good deals that promise to teach you everything you need to know, only to attempt to upsell you constantly.
They are still worth the money, but you NEED to understand that these people are trying to suck as much money as they can out of you, so you NEED to be honest about what you’re getting yourself into. If you aren’t planning on taking something extremely seriously, DO NOT keep purchasing up-sells. Saying this hurts my commissions but I don’t know of any courses yet that don’t operate like this. When I find them I’ll gladly promote them to people, but until then I’m just working with what I have.
Personally, I prefer to use the affiliate programs for the company who sells the product I’m promoting, IF I can avoid using affiliate networks, but there’s nothing inherently wrong with affiliate networks, and some companies run their affiliate programs through an affiliate network anyway.
The Best Products To Sell
Digital products only have to be created once, and can be distributed infinitely after that, which allows affiliates to earn higher commission rates for selling them due to higher profit margins compared to physical products.
Digital products that offer a subscription based service are a dream come true for affiliate marketers because it allows them to receive recurring monthly commissions.
Recurring commissions are important because they don’t just get charged once, they get charged every month. This means as start getting more and more people to sign up for subscription based services, your income will grow each month, as long as your referrals don’t quit using the service.

Other Affiliate Or Referral Marketing Products
Sometimes you niche doesn’t offer a lot of services with recurring commissions, so you have to work with what you have.
Pretty much every company has an affiliate or refer-a-friend program and they’ll typically pay people a decent amount of money for good leads.
These companies have billions, or sometimes trillions of dollars (Hi Amazon!) and they can afford to pay you $10 to refer someone to their product.
OR, some companies will simple pay you to make random sales, like Bookshop.org, which is an online bookstore that makes promoting books easy. They pay a 10% commission on any book sales made by people who use your affiliate link, OR if they find your store and purchase a book you’ve curated.
Some other good referral marketing products that digital marketers like to promote are free investing apps.
Investing and banking services are always looking for new people to join so they will gladly give you free shares of stocks to use their service.
Here are some investing and banking apps that I use to make money and I feel like they are great candidates for new affiliates to use. The reason I love these apps is because they are in the financial industry, which is a HUGE money maker, BUT they don’t require you to have excessive amounts of knowledge about investing in order to promote them.
If you just learn the basics, and tell people what you honestly think about them, it’s fairly easy to get people to sign up.
Instead of making these links affiliate links, these are links to reviews of each of these apps because it’s in your best interest to know what these apps do BEFORE you just randomly sign up for them.
These reviews are on a website I own, which is another common tactic used by internet marketers. Instead of bombarding your audience with endless referral links, like a lot of novice affiliate marketers do (myself included), you can simply create a more appropriate website that gives the readers value without cluttering everything up.
Here’s a list of the apps and services I promote and a quick rundown of their affiliate rewards so you can get a general idea of what they pay:
- Webull – Webull will give you a free share of a randomly selected stock, priced between $2-$250 for signing up, and an additional bonus share of a randomly selected stock priced between $12-$1400 when you deposit $100 within 30 days of opening your account.
- CashApp – CashApp gives you a bonus $5 when you join and send $5 to a friend with the app within 14 days. It’s a money transfer app too so they can send it right back. You’ll also get $5 every time someone joins with your referral link and sends $5 within 14 days.

- M1 Finance – M1 Finance will give you a bonus $10 when you open an account and deposit $100. You’ll also get $10 for every person who signs up with your referral link and deposits $100 into their M1 Finance account.
- Acorns – Acorns will give you $5 when you open a new account and deposit $5.
- Etoro – Etoro will add $50 to your account if you sign up for Etoro, deposit $50, and leave it there for 7 days.
- Coinbase – Coinbase will give you $10 when you sign up and trade your first $100 worth of cryptocurrency with their app. You’ll also receive $10 worth of bitcoin when someone joins with your referral link and trades their first $100 worth of crypto. They occasionally will allow users to watch videos about different cryptocurrencies and give you a small test to make sure you were paying attention in exchange for a few dollars worth of cryptocurrency. It’s a pretty neat concept, in my opinion.
- Varo – Online banking with no fees. Opening an account and direct depositing $200+ into your account within the first 45 days will get us both $75.
The fintech industry is massive and there’s lots of room for people to promote products, so give it a try!
I don’t really like promoting many other services, but one hidden gem that isn’t investment related is a service called Rakuten.
Rakuten is a cashback app that automatically finds cashback deals for you when you visit a website. You’d be surprised at how quickly the money adds up, especially if you shop online a lot, which most people do.
Not only is Rakuten a useful app in general, it’s also pretty generous with it’s sign-up and referral bonuses. They typically pay new users who sign up and shop online at qualifying stores somewhere around $25-30 extra dollars on top of the cashback offers. Usually the amount they have to spend is equal to the bonus offer, so if they are offering $25 for signing up, you have to spend $25 online to receive the bonus, etc…
I actually used this offer to buy my girlfriend her Christmas present when I was first starting out with affiliate marketing because I was broke and they basically sent me the money back for the purchase. ^.^ Sometimes that’s just how it is, and you have to be resourceful, sorry honey.
When you refer a new user they will also pay you around $25-$30 when the new user completes the offer, which is pretty good for a flat commission from this type of service.

Pay more attention to brand names in your life from now on. Notice how they do things and try to replicate them. You’ll see them sticking to one color scheme most of the time, and constantly advertising their name everywhere, and you’ll see promotions galore.
Promotions and giveaways are great tools to get people to notice you and want to trust you, because money talks.
When your goals align with your brand and your social media strategy aligns to support it all, THAT’S when you’ll start to become successful.

Your goals are what drive you, and if you don’t ave clear goals it can get hard to figure out what your next step should be.
Luckily, setting goals is extremely easy, ESPECIALLY since you can change them at any time since they’re YOUR goals.
Most people are REALLY good at figuring out goals, but they never really write them down or do anything about them. People would rather just think about a dream life rather than live one, for some reason.
Once you set a goal, you can begin to plan a way to attain that goal, but if you never set the goal in the first place and leave it at “I wish…” then you’ll NEVER get what you want.
It’s really that simple.
Starting A Social Media Strategy
Social media can really make your business start to take off rapidly IF you know what you’re doing.
The problem is – it’s time consuming to learn all of the different social media platforms and to make/schedule posts for them all regularly. You have enough work as it is so adding more can feel overwhelming.
Fortunately, you don’t have to spend too much time on it… I’ll show you how.
The main thing with social media is to not allow it to consume all of your time. Just post your content on your accounts and move on. DON’T spend all day arguing with people over politics or random stuff UNLESS you plan on leveraging that into some kind of revenue, otherwise you’ll cripple your productivity.
Use Canva or Stencil to create visually appealing posts. Try to batch these, meaning you make a bunch of them in a row and save them into a folder. This helps you be more efficient because you don’t have any downtime in between creating posts. If you were to make them one at a time, it takes time to open up Canva and get yourself ready to make a new post, or a good one anyway.
You DON’T need to use the paid versions, the free versions work great.
If you want to make really nice looking flowcharts check out a service called Mockflow. The free version is really great, and pretty easy to get the hang of.
Research the times of day people in your country(or the country where your customers primarily live) use social media and schedule a couple of posts per day (2-3) on each of the social media platforms for that time, or somewhere around it.
Once you get revenue coming in, consider either hiring a social media manager or using a service like Buffer to help you schedule social media posts. You don’t need to worry about spending any money on this type of thing until you know what you’re doing and have income.
Repeat this process until you have a decent social media following, then you can start trying to monetize.
You don’t want to start trying to make money off of them too soon because it’ll be hard to grow your following when you’re spamming ads at them all day.
This is a good enough social media strategy to get you started, HOWEVER if you start to notice that you aren’t able to just post on social media and move on, you may want to consider avoiding social media until you can hire someone to manage these accounts for you.
Growing Your Skills And Being More Efficient
Most people assume you have to be the best at something, or naturally talented at it, to get ahead in the world, but that isn’t true.
You have to work hard and hone your skills to be great at something, but most people have the capacity to learn how to do most things.
Education and personal growth are the best things you can invest in, because they increase your value and your ability to provide value to other people.
There’s a reason so many people are selling training courses and making guides on Youtube for a living.
Your skills, and how much effort you put into refining them, is pretty much the biggest contributing factor to your success so neglect improvement at your own risk.
Remember, books are your friend. They cost almost nothing and can change your life.

Mindset: Growing As A Person
If you want your business to grow, you’re going to have to accept that part of the reason it isn’t growing is because you’re the main limiting factor.
This isn’t a bad thing, this is just how it is. You can either accept it or you can deny it, but either way, that’s how it is.
Luckily, all you have to do is try to improve! It’s really that simple, and chances are – if you’re doing something you love, you’ll want to improve at it anyway.
It can be really frustrating trying to break down all your flaws and accept them, and even more frustrating to figure out how to avoid them in your business, but you have to if you want to get anywhere. Your flaws are what is holding you back.
There’s a reason all of those mindset coaches are making millions and millions of dollars.
It’s not because they are huge scammers and are tricking everyone into giving them money… they just realize that the best thing they can offer someone is an opportunity to improve themselves, and they get REWARDED for it.
You have to keep working hard and work on your mindset constantly if you want to succeed.
Don’t let failure scare you and don’t let anything stop you from reaching your goals.
It’s only a waste of time if you let it be a waste of time.
